AutoCAD’s development began in 1982. It was created by a team of AutoDesk employees. Its name is a combination of the words automatic and computerized. AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available on mobile devices. In 2002, version 9 of AutoCAD was the first version of AutoCAD to be released for Mac OS X. AutoCAD was introduced for Windows in 1994. AutoCAD received a cloud-based online editing service in 2006.

AutoCAD has built-in 3D modeling tools and a rich 3D environment to support 3D design, manufacturing, rendering, animation, and the like. AutoCAD provides tools for the creation of dynamic 3D animation, rigid body, moving mesh, non-uniform rational B-spline, thin shell, surface, and space-filling surfaces. AutoCAD also has features such as a Dynamic Structures toolset, parametric connectors, constraints, various workplane and clearance options, and built-in BIM/BIMx tools.
AutoCAD now supports creation of virtual environments with the IES6.0/2.0 toolsets. This is done with Autodesk’s application, Tag Cloud, a CAE/FEM/ME application integrated into the 3D modeling capabilities of AutoCAD. Tag Cloud allows non-visual analysis of the model, and it provides a means to communicate changes in the model to the design team. Tag Cloud can produce multiple file formats for visualization and analysis including 3D Navisworks (3D-Navi) and ParaView.

AutoCAD uses a raster-to-vector (RTV) conversion method to import and convert raster images into vector images.
AutoCAD has an ability to import raster images and vectorize them into vector images. This feature is referred to as “raster to vector” or “RTV” for short. This feature can import multiple layers from raster images. The vectorization feature also has the ability to export the vector images as either SVG, DXF, JPG, or PNG format. This feature is referred to as “Vectorization”.
On the opposite side, the feature of AutoCAD to export vector images as either SVG, DXF, JPG, or PNG format. The vectorization feature can also create raster images from vector images. The result of the vectorization feature is usually called “vectorization”.
The Vectorization feature of AutoCAD allows creating images that show a map of lines, curves, circles, and so on, that are moved or stretched. Vectorization is often used to create workflows to meet architectural design requirements or create logos for businesses.
