Coronavirus does not spread like influenza in children

In children, the new coronavirus does not spread in the same way as common flu. This is the conclusion of a study carried out at the Hospital Dona Estefânia in Lisbon. That can be good news, especially when you’re back at school.

Coronavirus

Maria João Brito, a paediatric infectious diseases specialist at the Lisbon hospital, during the meeting at Infarmed on Monday with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, said that neither young people nor children have the freedom to contract the virus.

However, Covid-19 can manifest itself differently in age groups. The specialist presented the study based on data from children infected with the new coronavirus that passed through the hospital Dona Estefânia – Centro Universitário Lisboa Central.

Of a total of 285 paediatric patients with Covid-19, 23% had no symptoms.

During the intervention, he stated that coronaviruses “are not transmitted in the same way as influenza viruses or other respiratory viruses. Therefore, seeing the closure of schools that led us to fear that infection would start from the child to the adult, which is what happens with the flu, not really be the model that happens”.

In statements collected by Agência Lusa, Maria João Brito said that “opening up kindergartens is one thing, opening colleges is another, and opening colleges is another. Therefore, the transmission speed for very young children really seems to be lower”.

Nevertheless, the specialist at the hospital Dona Estefânia warned that the transmission of the new coronavirus in children is still a conundle. Caring for other common winter infections remains essential.

“While it is not surprising that the impact of this social distance on children is impressive, the number of cofections has decreased significantly”, a situation that the infectious disease doctor assumes may change when schools open and teaching starts again.

It should be remembered that the meeting at Infarmed brought together Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Costa, as well as the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, party, employers and trade union leaders.

The school year officially starts in the public education system between 14 and 17 September.
